History of Taiko and World Beat Reception Entertainment

Gaia Taiko is the big drum ensemble troupe of choice in Las Vegas specializing in reception entertainment, live asian, japanese and world beat band music for corporate events and private parties.

Taiko literally translates to large-wide drum in Japanese, but is often used to describe a variety of sizes of Asian percussion instruments played with drum sticks called bachi.

Taiko has been in existence in Japan for over 2000 years. It was used for construction rhythm and religious rituals and festivals. Taiko later had an important role in Kabuki theater.

Taiko ensemble groups or “kumi-daiko” consist of 2 or more players playing drums in unison. In taiko, both sides of the drums are played and in ensemble drumming a single drum may be played by more then one player in a performance.

There are 2 major types of drum heads: Byou-uchi daiko are typically made up of a single piece of hollowed out wood with the drum head nailed to the body. The tsukushime-daiko which are laced onto to the body. Other drums are made in a barrel type construction.. The largest taiko drum is the odaiko. Some of these drums are so large they have a permanent home in a temple or shrine because they cannot be moved.

The drums are generally tuned to a higher pitch in relation to their size. This is to compensate for the effects of humidity in their native Japan

In the 20th century, taiko found a home in the United States through early Hawaii and San Francisco cultural festivals. World War II sadly imposed a predjudice against many traditional Japanese art forms such as taiko, and was almost lost until a taiko revival in the 1960s. Thankfully, these majestic drums and the art form of playing them is regaining popularity in our new 21st century.
